Dr. Keith Carver,
Welcome to the University of Tennessee at Martin's Web site and Chancellor's Corner. I am both excited and honored to be selected as the eleventh Chancellor and return to this great University!
UT Martin has always taken great pride in offering the best student experience for the almost 7,000 students who either live on our campus or engage our faculty through our convenient extended classrooms or our award winning online programs. With choices of more than 100 different specialties in undergraduate and graduate programs, UT Martin can serve almost everyone’s educational aspirations.
We believe that it is important for our degree recipients to have a recognized quality education. That is why we have held ourselves to the highest standards established by national and international accrediting associations. To have these independent groups certify that our programs are among the nation’s elite is important to how our students are employed and promoted within their chosen fields. As just a sample, examine our nursing, engineering, and business programs. See why those who judge and rate educational programs include UT Martin among the elite.
Another example of our quality programs is our successful online education. UT Martin’s MBA program ranked 18th nationally on the 2015 Best Online Programs and ranked 16th nationally for Veterans as published by U.S. News & World Report. Programs included in the veteran-specific rankings must also come from institutions that are certified with the GI Bill and either participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program or offer in-state tuition to all out-of-state veterans. These testimonies show that earning a degree is a convenient choice for our non-traditional students and especially for those who are serving and have served our nation.
For those who live on the main campus, we offer a rich complex of experiences designed to enhance your intellectual talent as well as your leadership skills. Our commitment is to provide the best student experience focused on your success. Our goal is that you are well prepared to satisfy your aspirations both in your chosen career and in your community. We are building leaders for a global society.
UT Martin has also been an important driver for economic development in West Tennessee. We will continue to provide help to existing businesses to grow jobs and increase the livability in our communities. We hope to ignite the entrepreneurial talent of our students to build thousands of enterprises throughout the region. The Ned Ray McWherter Institute (NRMI) is designed to revolutionize Northwest Tennessee’s economic landscape and workforce by inspiring, developing, and sustaining a vibrant culture of collaboration and innovation. The Regional Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Center (REED Center), housing the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC), works to meet the needs of existing and potential business owners through one-on-one consultations and interactive training programs. The WestStar program has inspired leaders for more than a quarter of a century, producing a generation of our mayors, councilmen and women, legislators, and civic leaders throughout West Tennessee.
We can’t mention livable communities without developing our appreciation for the fine and performing arts. UT Martin serves an important role throughout this region in providing cultural opportunities as well as having a world-class faculty and first-rate facilities both for instruction and audience appreciation. We hope you will see for yourself the artistic talent we have in this region.
UT Martin has also been a careful steward of our natural resources and environment. If you have never been to the Reelfoot Lake Environmental Field Station (RLEFS) located in Samburg, Tennessee, then you’ve missed an important part of West Tennessee history and ecology. The RLEFS is the state's largest natural lake surrounded by wetland and upland habitats that allows a variety of unique teaching, research, and outreach opportunities. Our own campus has served as a model of sustainability, ranked by Princeton Review among the approximate top 300 “Green Colleges” in the United States.
As I begin serving the constituents of UT Martin, I want to reach our alumni with a promise that every day we will increase the value of your degree in the marketplace. It is our responsibility to steward the reputation and enhance the quality of your degree. Talented faculty, engaged staff, and a clear focus on our mission will serve as the foundation for this commitment. You are our partners in this goal. Let us know how we are doing.
