It is important that UT Martin has a faculty evaluation procedure that correctly, consistently, and continually evaluates all of our faculty. Towards this end, in 2018 the campus established faculty experts in every discipline, organized into five college faculty evaluation committees and one campus-wide faculty evaluation committee (cFEC). Every department was asked to develop roles and expectations for their faculty, and the committees worked to create a new, campus-wide faculty evaluation system that would provide consistent faculty evaluation ratings while remaining flexible enough to honor the individual strengths and interests of each faculty member. At all levels this work was faculty-led.
The new faculty evaluation process that resulted from this process was beta-tested in 2018-19. That process is outlined in the Faculty Evaluation Guidebook.
This Guidebook has two parts. The first part (and the majority of the text) describes the annual evaluation plan. The far smaller second part (overseen by the Faculty Senate’s Personnel Policies Committee) will describe miscellaneous evaluation activities in far greater detail than belongs in the Faculty Handbook. As feedback was collected from departments implementing the initial beta-test process, the Guidebook has been updated. We plan to continue to modify the guidebook as feedback continues with the remainder of the campus during 2019-20.
For campus-wide implementation in 2019-20, departments (and colleges as needed) will hold discussions on the three roles of a faculty member: teaching, research, and scholarship, in order to adapt their existing faculty evaluation systems to the new model. Those starting the process in 2019-20 year may opt to use both old and new systems of evaluation for next year.
Those who began with beta testing in Fall 2018 will use only the new method for next year. Many departments who began testing in 2018-19 are now refining what they developed last year for tenure track faculty, and are also developing templates for evaluating those with term appointments, staff/teaching combination assignments, and adjunct instructors.
